If you are planning on going on a big trip, that’s obviously one of the most exciting experiences you are likely to have in your life. But there are lots of things that you will need to focus on and get ready if you are going to make sure you do it right. One area to focus on here is the home, which you will need to make sure you are getting ready before you are actually going to go anywhere. As it happens, there are a few things that you need to think about and make sure you are putting into place here.
In this post, we’ll take you through the main things you should do before you go away so that you are able to have peace of mind around your home and you’ll know that it’s going to be as looked after as possible while you are not there.
Clean & Declutter
A good first step is simply to make sure that you are cleaning and decluttering the whole place. This is important for a number of reasons. Most of all, you don’t want to come back to a home that is dirty and untidy, so it’s really important to make sure that you are going to clean it before you go. This also means that you won’t be encouraging any rodents or other pests to set up home while you are away, which is one of the main dangers that can occur here.
So go around each room and give it a good deep clean as well as a thorough declutter. You may find that there are some items which you want to put into storage too, and that can help a lot. If you can do that, you’re going to find that you are so much more likely to come home to your home how you want it to be, and you’ll also find that the remaining things we are going to look at here will be easier to do as well, so it really is a win-win.
Put Lights On A Timer
This is an old tried and tested way to try and deter burglars, and it’s certainly something that works well. If you are going to try and keep people from entering your home while you are not there, you need to try and make them think that someone is home. A good way to do that is to have some lights on, but this is not very eco-friendly if they are on all the time - and it’s also not very convincing.
Instead, put some lights around the home on a timer. This way, you can make sure that they are going to come on and go off at certain times, so even if someone were closely watching your home, it would look as though you are there. This is a really powerful way to make sure that you are going to avoid being burgled while you are on your trip.
Check Windows & Doors
A week or two before you go, it’s a good idea to check the windows and doors, just to make sure that they are as secure as can be. If there are any problems here, you’ll want to get them fixed as soon as possible. That might be a crack in a window, a door that is not locking properly, or anything like this that might be a security issue. It’s really important to make sure that you are sorting these things out as soon as possible. If you don’t, you are only going to find yourself worrying about it while you are away.
Talk To Your Neighbors
One of the most powerful tools you can have here is a neighbor or two that you can trust. If there is someone in the vicinity that you know you are able to tell you are not going to be home, then they can keep an eye on the home for you. You might even decide that you want to give them a key, so that they can let themselves in should there be any issues. Of course, it does need to be someone that you can trust fully, but if it is, then this is a great approach that you can take which is really going to help a lot.
Those are some of the main things you can do to get the home ready before you go away on a big trip.
