I am a practical gift giver. I like to gift things that will be used and appreciated for a long time if possible. Yes, I am the household gadget, kitchen appliance, underwear & socks, and everything useful gifter. I have received gifts that have sat in the box in the closet for years and were never even opened so, I do my best to keep from giving the same types of gifts.
Something classic, that will be loved for years and years, that will be used every single day, several times of day, that isn’t too much to ask for, is it? No, I don't think so. What about the gift of time, or at least tracking it? What about a classic timepiece from Casio?
I don't want to turn this into a cry post but, after all, it is Christmas right? So, here it goes.
I love working with Casio for more than just their beautiful timepieces, musical equipment, and school products. For me, it’s an emotional bond that I don't think I have even shared with the brand. My dad loved Casio. I remember the watch that he wore. I would pretend to be him and tell him what time it was. When you lose someone that you love so much, little moments in time that don't seem like they were important or even anywhere close to the "making memories" type of moments, they truly are.
I lost my dad when I was 7 years old in a car accident. He was on vacation and it was an unexpected icy road when another car slid through the intersection and hit him. He died on impact at only 26 years old. I loved him so much and I have the most random thoughts sometimes. One of them is about his watch.
I would stand on the seat of the toilet and watch him shave before church on Sundays. I was tall enough to still be shorter them him while standing on a toilet so I had to be 5 or 6. In my mind, I can still see it the way my eyes saw it. My little kid hands holding it and watching the hands move. To me, I was just trying to count how many times the hand would click, I think I expected it to get to a point and be done.
I'd poked at the circles on his watch and made the flex band move like a worm.
I would ask questions like "Why there were so many circles?" "What does this one do?" "How many times are there?" and tell him I knew what time it was when I really didn't. I would say things like "it's seventeen OH-Clock daddy" and he would say "you're right, baby" and it made me feel like such a big girl. "Can you help daddy put it on?" he would say and when I would, such a confidence boost because I was helping. I loved him so much and not a day goes by that I don't think about him.
Every chance I get to work with Casio, I think of my dad and his watch.
