Today we get to share Sweep the World with you. I love this game for so many reasons. It's fun, entertaining, and is super educational. What I love about the educational aspect is you don't have to know all about the world to be able to successfully play the game. By playing, it helps players learn about the world.
It was just the other day my oldest daughter said she learned a lot in school about world geography but really didn't know much about it and would like to. I said well, you would not believe what I just got for a review. Sweep The World. This is such a cool game and shows more than just locations of the world.
Each card shows the area (size) of a country, the population, the continent it's on, and the ocean that it's by. Just by playing the game, it's so easy to learn all about the countries, size, and location. You don't have to be a genius in geography to play. The cards are color-coordinated to match their continent. It's a great concept and easy to play for the whole family.
What comes in the box?
Everything you need to play is right in the box. Nothing additional is needed to play; no batteries, notebooks, keeping score, or anything like that. It's a straightforward, all-inclusive card game.
The game comes with 250 cards total covering every country in the world! They are color assigned by continent.
Europe has 46 cards.
Aisa has 47 cards.
North America has 23 cards.
South America has 12 cards.
Oceania has 14 cards.
Africa has 54 cards.
Who can play Sweep the World?
This game is recommended for all players 7+. It's a great game to start young for learning geography in a fun way, learning turn-taking, and strategy. It's competitive and simple and very interesting the whole way through! It's meant to be played with 2-10 players. The more players there are the faster the game and more competitive you can be.
How do I play Sweep the World?
Playing the game is super simple and very easy to get going.
Shuffle all of the cards together to make one very mixed-up deck of cards. Since there are so many cards, you can shuffle in sections and shuffle them together again. Each player gets 5 cards to start.
The first player draws 2 cards from the draw pile and lays down their World card (discard pile). This continues for all of the players until everyone has a world card flipped up in front of them.
On each turn after, the player draws 2 cards from the draw pile and makes matches with cards on another World Pile (discard pile). You can only select on World Pile to make matches with for each turn. If you have matches for more than one World Pile, pick the one that serves you best. The point of the game is to empty your hand by making matches. At the end of the game when all of the draw pile is in play, the person with the least amount of cards in their World Pile WINS.
Playing World Cards and Ocean Cards
This is where it gets interesting. The World Cards and the Ocean cards are like bonus cards. Once you have played one of these cards, you can take up to five cards from yours or someone else's World Stack and play them against the World and Ocean Card.
How Do I Make Matches?
Now that the basic gameplay and rotation are understood, it's time to understand making matches. Each card has a Color Coded Contenant, population, Area, and Ocean. You can make matches by matching any segment to another card.
I tried to show this in the image below but I felt like I was getting too arrow crazy. There are more ways to match than just the arrows I put down. I started with Gambia (far right).
Area: 4,127 Sq Miles
Population: 2.4 mil
Ocean: Atlantic
Continent: Africa
You can play Ukraine because it matches with the Ocean.
You can play Zambia because it matches Africa.
You can match Ukraine to Zambia because of the Area.
You can match Phillinines With Ukraine or Zambia because of the Area.
I didn't know any of this starting out! There are 250 cards in this game that are dedicated to world geography and entertainment. I would have never thought those two topics would go together. You can go as fast or as slow as you would like to make your turns, there is no time limit. Having fun is the best way to play this game and learning the world is a bonus!
