4 Tips for Hosting a Grown-Up Game Night

One of the perks of having older kids is that you end up finding more adults that you have things in common with. It seems like when your children are babies, all moms are in competition with each other to be the best mom and everyone has an opinion about how everything you're doing is wrong. Unwanted advice is the worst! Then you grow up, your kids don't need you as much, and you make real friends that you actually want to spend time with.

Family game night is one of my favorite things to do, ever. So why not host a game night for our grown-up friends too? Here are some of my best tips for hosting a grown-up game night.

Have a Designated Game Area

We recently enclosed our porch and turned it into a bedroom, so our back porch is no longer the area where we'd have friends come and hang out. There used to be a pool table and we'd spend hours having fun and hanging out. Now, the living room has more room to entertain, so pulling a table in there with a few chairs makes the most sense.

Decide which area of your house can accommodate your friends and set it up for your game night. A dining room table and a few chairs are really all you need!

Don't Forget the Snacks

Whether you're inviting over another couple to play games with you or if you're having a large group - you'll need snacks. Some of my favorites to serve are kettle corn or even some chips and dip. The easiest way to do snacks is to have a self-serve area (we use our kitchen bar) and some paper plates. The more portable the snacks, the better!

Make Sure You Invite Enough People

When you're planning your game night, it's important to make sure that you'll have a good amount of people depending on the games you want to play. For instance, if you're playing a game that needs partners, choosing to invite an odd number of people may cause some tension.

Choose Appropriate Games

I doubt your adult friends want to play Candy Land or Go Fish, so pick a fun or even a raunchy game to play! I recently had the chance to review Shit Happens - an offensive card game for adults that would be perfect for a grown-up game night.

Shit Happens is based on the "Would You Rather" party game and rates unfortunate events on a Misery Index from 1 to 100. The scores were ranked by a panel of mental health experts and factor in stress levels, psychological effects, and emotional distress. The goal of the game is to decide if you think those scores are right. What could be more fun than seeing if your friends think that it would be worse to smell like a fart for the rest of your life or get pepper spray in your eyes?

In the box, there are 200 shitty situations that have happened, or could happen. Each player gets three cards and the rest go into a draw pile. Your cards get placed face up in front of you to form your Lane of Pain. Whoever dealt the cards gets to go first, so the person to their right selects a card from the draw pile without saying what its Misery Index is. Then, the dealer has to decide where the card would go in their Lane of Pain. If they guess right, they get the card and gameplay continues clockwise. If they guess wrong, the person to the left gets a chance to steal. Whoever gets 10 cards first, wins.

Shit Happens is a hilarious and fun game - just make sure there's no little ones running around when you play!
